Arts District Cape Town
Visual Identity
Arts District Cape Town is a where culture, identity, and creativity meet, where tradition and innovation coexist. It is an arts district that showcases a flow of expression across mediums, across people, and across time.
This is a visionary project aimed at creating a vibrant cultural hub in the heart of South Africa’s Mother City. It tells the story of art through time, as it celebrates the richness of South African culture and heritage through a diverse range of artistic performances, exhibitions, and events.
The concept of The Arts District Cape Town is rooted in the heritage of South African traditions but it is applied to the visual identity in a striking and contemporary way.
Cape Town is the place where history and art blend into a diverse culture, influenced from many sides, but with a clear and loud identity. My concept explores the flow of culture through time – from the past rooted in tradition to the present contemporary look of art.
The logo is a symbol that represents the four categories of art that are most prominent in South Africa – visual arts, applied arts, media arts and performance arts. Each shape would belong to either of those artistic outlets and they all combine into a final logo mark that symbolizes unity and shapes the contemporary look of Arts District Cape Town.
The color palette was inspired by the idea that Cape Town is all about color and that is what liberates them as people. Art is also a very liberating form of expression. In South Africa, during the apartheid, people used music and dance, as well as visual arts to fight the socio-political injustices and that in itself is powerful. I chose vibrant colors and paired them with the established art categories.
